Yes. Anti-virus software searches for viruses on your computer and tries to prevent, isolate, or remove it from your system. Some of them also look for other types of mal-ware like spy-ware that slow your computer down.

The free ones you download and run them from time to time to search for viruses. Every time you run it you check for new definitions which is a file that describes the viruses so the software knows what to look for.

For NOD32 you need to buy a subscription which costs around $30 per year. This fee allows you to subscribe to their virus database and get updates for the software.

hm... so what does this do exactly? Is it one of those things that search for viruses like Trojan and gets rid of it? So how long do these last after you "download" them or something?

We had discussed possible antivirus solutions for computers and I wanted to make sure I posted some links to them:

I have been hearing that Microsoft's free antivirus is good for a free antivirus:
http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/

AVG free seems popular:
http://free.avg.com/us-en/homepage

Mac users can try this out if they would like to:
http://www.clamxav.com/

My current favorite non-free antivirus is NOD32:
http://www.eset.com/products/nod32.php

Does anyone else have computer security software they would like to suggest.
